For this work I reassembled short segments of poetry used in the madrigals of the Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. The intensely passionate poetry about love offered a number of phrases that could be re-interpreted to convey a great sense of love and despair for our planet in an era of climate change. The poetry is certainly melodramatic by today’s standards but it seems appropriate given the high stakes of our current global crisis.
The composition was commissioned by Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Below is a recording of the work featuring Chor Leoni and the Leonids.
”a concert highlight. MacDonald has recast segments of a Renaissance madrigal by Carlo Gesualdo into a love song for our burning planet, both choirs joining in the work’s complexity and passion.” Stir Digital Magazine
