Bio

Don Macdonald has a multifaceted musical career that includes performing, conducting, and composing. He has performed professionally on violin, saxophone and voice and his conducting resumé includes work with symphony orchestra, choir and jazz band. He has composed music for orchestra, jazz band, concert band, choir and contemporary rock and jazz ensembles. His choral works have been performed by some of Canada’s most noted ensembles including the Vancouver Bach Choir and Chor Leoni Men’s Choir and he currently has 3 published choral works.
Over the last 15 years Don has composed the scores for feature films, TV series, documentaries, commercials and he has worked with many of the major studios including 20th Century Fox and Lions Gate Films. Soundtracks have been recorded with small chamber ensembles as well as large orchestral set ups.
His scores to “Kissed” (1997) and “ Fido” (2007) earned him Genie nominations and his opera score for Cannes Film Festival winner, “Shoes Off” was recognized as “…one of the most compelling original scores attached to any Canadian film, ever…” (Vancouver Province). In 2010 his choral composition titled “Tabula Rasa” won the Da Capo Chamber Choir New Works Competition.
