Don Macdonald’s composition credits include music for classical ensembles, opera, theatre, dance, published vocal works and forays into everything from jazz and rock to contemporary electronic music. He has has over 20 feature film credits and his operatic score for Cannes’ Film Festival winner “Shoes Off” was recognized as “one of the most compelling original scores attached to any Canadian film, ever……” (Vancouver Province). His soundtrack to the cult classic Zombie comedy “Fido” was recorded iwith the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and won the award for best soundtrack at the Gerardmer Film Festival in France. His soundtracks have been written for many of the large studios including Lions Gate, Metro Goldwyn Meyer and 20th Century Fox.

Don’s classical compositions have been performed by some of Canada’s most noted ensembles including Uzume Taiko Ensemble, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir, the Vancouver Bach Choir and Electra Women’s Choir. His most recent commission, for the opera “KHAOS”, resulted in a Director’s Choice award at the Boston Metro Opera Composition Competition and was highlighted at the 2013 Opera America Conference as one of 4 pieces selected to the New Works Sampler. His composition “Tabula Rasa”, one of 4 published choral works, received the DaCapo Chamber Choir award for Best Choral Composition in 2010.

Don currently resides in Nelson, BC where he teaches at the Selkirk College Contemporary Music and Technology Program.
